Securing Decent Work in North Africa
|
"The primary goal of the ILO today is to promote opportunities for women and men to obtain decent and productive work, in conditions of freedom, equity, security and human dignity."
Juan Somavia, ILO Director-General
|
Decent Work sums up the aspirations of people worldwide. It involves creating freely chosen, productive jobs for women and men; jobs that are in safe, healthy, participatory work environments and that afford them decent and equitable remuneration, social protection and, whenever possible, professional development.
Promoting Decent Work is the ILO's main goal worldwide. It is essential to achieving fair globalization and poverty reduction. Decent Work was recognized at the 2005 UN World Summit as instrumental to fulfilling the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The Decent Work Agenda consists of four pillars, with gender equality and poverty reduction as cross-cutting objectives:
- International labour standards and rights at work;
- Employment creation and enterprise development;
- Social protection;
- Social dialogue.
The Sub-Regional Office for North Africa in Cairo promotes the Decent Work Agenda in seven North African countries through the Decent Work Country Programme (DWCP) framework, that organizes ILO interventions in each individual country into a coherent, result-oriented and assessable programme.
