In June 2019, the ILO adopted the Violence and Harassment Convention No.190 and its supplementing Recommendation No.206. These are the first international standards to provide a common framework to prevent, remedy and eliminate violence and harassment in the world of work, including gender-based violence and harassment. The ILO has prepared a series of briefs that provide an overview of the instruments and feature specific topics which are of particular importance when addressing violence and harassment in the world of work.

A qualitative study on stigma and discrimination experienced by indigenous peoples living with HIV or having TB at work

Indigenous peoples living with HIV or having TB face double discrimination. Being an LGBT indigenous person adds another layer to this. Barriers to accessing health services, denial of the right to work and discrimination in employment settings are highlighted in a new ILO study undertaken by the Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network, the secretariat of the International Indigenous HIV & AIDS Working Group. The impact of HIV on care work and the care workforce

This publication provides an overview of the gaps and challenges in six sub-Saharan African countries (Liberia, Namibia, South Africa, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania and Zambia). By providing a picture of front-line prevention and treatment policies, this working paper assesses the socio-economic consequences of low antiretroviral therapy (ART) coverage as well as the key role of the health workforce in international testing and treatment targets (90-90-90). The impact of HIV on caregivers’ working status and their employment opportunities is also reviewed through an empirical analysis.

Research on Promoting Fair Employment for People Living with HIV in China

HIV related stigma and discrimination are particularly pronounced in three areas, employment, access to medical treatment and confidentiality, according to ILO reports of 2011. Employment discrimination is one of the greatest concerns of People Living with HIV in China today.

HIV self-testing at the workplace

Launched ahead of World AIDS Day 2018, the policy brief, developed by ILO and WHO, outlines key planning and implementation considerations for managers and implementers on HIV self-testing at workplaces. Given the gaps in HIV testing, HIV self-testing is one of the options recommended by WHO that can be used to reach undiagnosed populations. HIV self-testing at workplaces gives workers more choices, greater confidentiality and convenience.

Although access to effective HIV antiretroviral treatments has improved significantly – enabling people living with HIV to live long and productive lives including working and contributing to society in many different ways – people living with HIV continue to face discrimination in relation to work in terms of finding employment, keeping jobs and furthering career progression. This brief provides a snapshot of the prevalence of discrimination against people living with HIV in workplace settings: a practice that is evident across countries and regions.
