On Wednesday 10 May 2017 the ILO and the UNFCCC secretariat (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) co-organized a side event on “Greening with Jobs: Decent Work and Just Transition in the Paris Agreement” took place during the Bonn Climate Change Conference 2017.

Participants discussed labour market implications of the implementation of nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and impacts on worker, enterprises and communities. They emphasized the necessity of engaging with businesses while ensuring that the workforce is adapting to new employment opportunities to support a just transition towards a low-carbon and climate resilient economy. Indeed jobs, decent work and climate change are intertwined. The example of Philippines and its policy measures to close several mining industries illustrates the necessity to address the various types of impact on employment of climate change response measures.

The side event concluded on outstanding issues that need to be tackled in this context, such as who should finance the shift toward environmental sustainability, how to yet still ensure gender equity in this framework, or where to find funds to finance the transformation process while including all tripartite constituencies and ensuring social justice and decent work.
