Official launch of PAGE Initiative in Peru
In the context of the international seminar “Towards an Economy with Green Growth in Peru”, held on 28 and 29 April in Lima, the Minister of Environment and the Minister of Labour and Employment Promotion reaffirmed their commitment to promote an economy with green growth in Peru.
In the presence of various national stakeholders and representatives of the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations Program for Environment (UNEP), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the United Nations Program for Development (UNDP), the Ministries of Labour and Environment signed the official declaration “Towards an Economy with Green Growth”. Thereby, they stressed the importance of promoting a green economy with green jobs creation as public policy to guide the country towards sustainable development and foster an economy that improves human well-being, social inclusion and equity. The declaration marks the beginning of the Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE) initiative in Peru.
During the event, the Minister of Labour and Employment Promotion, Ana Ethel del Rosario Jara Velásquez, said that PAGE Peru, in its first year of operation, will seek to identify gaps and opportunities for learning and will work with key economic sectors and the most relevant national partners to implement activities and jointly demonstrate the values of a green economy. Ana Jara explained: "Peru has enjoyed high economic growth, but existing environmental threats can reverse these achievements. A means to avoid these threats from becoming even more prominent is the use of clean energy with employment promotion, allowing for a structural change in labour and in production.
The Minster of Environment, Manuel Gerardo Pedro Pulgar-Vidal Otálora, stated: "We must recognize that the world, with initiatives such as PAGE, is beginning to develop and consolidate a process of more than 40 years, during which progressive changes have been made in establishing firm belief of the intrinsic importance of resource sustainability." Further, Manuel Pulgar noted that the concept Sustainable Development was introduced 25 years ago and is today a concept increasingly enrooted in both the public and private sectors.
Finally, both Ministers welcomed the support of the agencies within the UN system involved in PAGE and stressed that they will continue working together to foster development by incorporating the concept of green growth into public policy-making.
As a designated PAGE country, Peru will be supported through four components: i) applied research and knowledge creation; ii) policy dialogue with government officials and other important stakeholders; iii) capacity building, education and training; and iv) advisory services on green economy issues.
