    Over the last 20 years, important achievements have been made with regards to gender equality in the world of work. At least 50% of the world’s women are in paid wage and salary employment – an increase of 10% since the 1990s. In 2014, women held 24% of the world’s senior management positions, compared to 19% ten years ago.

    Domestic workers organize – but can they bargain?

    Does the traditional form of collective negotiation have the same potential to ensure decent working conditions in the sector? Or are there other forms, adapted to the sector that would be more effective in ensuring compliance with standards set through various forms of collective negotiation? The ILO is currently carrying out a study to answer just these questions, the preliminary results of which indicate that, to reach the same objective in domestic work will require not only the right to bargain collectively, but may also entail a reassessment of the source of power of domestic workers that would make such a system effective in ensuring employers comply with the agreements.

    ILO Newsletter “Migrant Domestic Workers in Focus” is an awareness rising and promotion tool developed in the framework of the EU funded Global Action Programme on Migrant Domestic Workers and their families (GAP-MDW) and published on a quarterly basis. The purpose of the newsletter is to promote decent work for migrant domestic workers globally and to keep ILO partners, constituents and other stakeholders informed about current and upcoming developments in the migration and domestic work sectors.

    Regional Model Competency Standards: Domestic work

    These Regional Model Competency Standards for Domestic Work have been developed by the ILO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific. They constitute a set of benchmarks that define the skills, knowledge and attributes required for domestic work as an employment. The standards are designed to be used as a basis for developing national standards and as a regional reference point.

    A passport size brochure, developed as part of the EU funded Global Action Programme for Migrant Domestic Workers and Their Families (GAP-MDW), was designed on request of workers’ organizations to guide Ukrainian domestic workers in Poland through the legal procedures of employment and labour rights of migrant domestic workers.
