ILO’s participation in the International Conference on Localizing the SDGs and Co-Constructing the Means of Implementation

The ILO, as a chair of the United Nations Inter-Agency Task Force on the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE), participated in an international conference on the role of SSE in implementing and localizing the SDGs which took place in the Republic of Korea.

The International Conference on Localizing the SDGs and Co-Constructing the Means of Implementation took place at Yonsei University’s Wonju Campus, in the Republic of Korea on 23-24 February 2019. Co-hosted by the Institution for Poverty Alleviation and International Development of Yonsei University (IPAID) of Korea, the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), this conference aimed at providing the participants with knowledge and information on good practices, challenges and opportunities, and lessons learned in the localizing of the SDGs.

Participants to the conference, including policy makers, researchers and practitioners, shared their views and experiences on the role that local institutions, including cooperatives and other SSE organizations, play in implementing the SDGs. They also noted challenges such as the low level of awareness about the SDGs at the local level. 

A special session, co-organized by the ILO and UNRISD on the ‘Knowledge Hub for the SDGs’ initiative of the UN Task Force on SSE cwas also held at the conference. Officials from the ILO and UNRISD led the session. As the current chair of the UN Task Force on SSE, the ILO has been on the forefront of promoting and advancing SSE. A conference of the UN Task Force on SSE will be held on 25-26 June 2019 in ILO Headquarters in Geneva on “Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals - What Role for Social and Solidarity Economy?”
