India ratifies the Seafarers’ Identity Documents Convention and the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006

India is the 31st ILO member State to ratify Convention No. 185 and the 66th to ratify the MLC, 2006

On 9 October 2015, the Government of India deposited with the International Labour Office the instrument of ratification of the Seafarers’ Identity Documents Convention (revised), 2003 (No. 185) and the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006).

India, which is the 31st ILO member State to ratify Convention No. 185 and the 66th to ratify the MLC, 2006, is a major maritime country and a very important maritime labour supplier. Indeed, according to the most recent data available, India has 12.544.247 tons of shipping and 62.673 seafarers. The conventions will enter into force for India on 9 April 2016 and 9 October 2016, respectively.

To date, the States that have ratified the MLC, 2006 represent approximately 80 per cent of the world gross tonnage of shipping. For more background information, please visit the dedicated MLC webpage at www.ilo.org/mlc.
